Luc De Wit

Director – Teacher – Feldenkrais practioner.

Luc De Wit

Luc de Wit was born in 1957 in Brussels.

He began his studies at the National Theatre School of Belgium and continued them at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris . Lassaâd Saïdi was one of his teachers there.

In 1984 he created the group Panterei.He worked with them as actor and director until 1991.

He gave workshops and also teached at the Amsterdam National Theatre School and at the Chapelle Reine Elisabeth in Brussels . For some years he was part of the teaching team at the Lassaâd Theatre School where he taught movement and acting.

In 1994 he completed training in the Feldenkrais method in the UK. At the same time he began his career as opera director on works by Handel, Mozart, Kagel, Poulenc, Mihaud…

Since 2005 he has been the artistic collaborator of William Kentridge. Luc directs the revivals of his productions throughout the world :

– The Magic Flute (Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Opera Houses in Lille, Caen, Rouen, Tel Aviv, New York, Naples, Cape Town, Johannesburg, La Scala of Milan, Festival in Aix en Provence, Théâtre des Champs Elysées),
– the Return of Ulysses by Monteverdi (Monnaie in Brussels, Seattle, San Francisco, Tours in Europe),
– Woyzeck by Büchner (Johannesburg, Paris, London, Minneapolis, tours in Europe).

In March 2010, Luc and William Kentridge together directed the new production of The Nose at the Metropolitan Opera of New York.

In 2011/2012 Luc has been working with Guy Cassiers on different plays for Toneelhuis and on the preparation for the staging of The Ring by Wagner.

In july 2012 in the Festival of Avignon, there was the premiere of Refuse The Hour, a new play by William Kentridge. Luc de Wit was the movement director for this project.

In 2013 Luc directs the Chorus for Götterdämmerung in the production of Guy Cassiers in The Staatsoper in Berlin en in La Scala in Milano. The same year he directs a new production of The Magic Flute together with Pierrick Sorrin for the Opera of Lyon.

In the autumn of 2013 he directs the revival of The Nose in the Met in NYC.

In 2015 Luc is co-directing with William Kentridge Lulu by alban Berg for the Opera of Amsterdam, The English National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.

Since 2011, he comes back as part of the teaching team at the LASSAAD International Theatre School , working on various themes with the second year students.
